Get Rid of Guilt

I’m not just an unconventional copywriter and writing coach. I’m a Jewish girl from Queens. If there’s anything I’m an expert in, it’s guilt and using comedy to cover pretty much every uncomfortable emotion. I truly value the latter. Laughing is good medicine after all. But here’s what I have to say about GUILT…

Fuck. That. Shit.

Guilt is a wasted emotion. It’s probably the second worst after ‘fear’ because it can not only keep us from action, but linger along long after an action has been taken, haunting us and rendering us incapable of joy.I can’t tell you how many times I hear people say “I want to, but I just feel bad” – this can exist on a large and small scale. We feel guilty eating a certain way, taking time for ourselves, being lazy, choosing one friend over another. We feel guilty canceling on someone, running late (even when it’s not our fault), or asking for help.

You could essentially convince yourself to feel guilty about anything that feels good, that’s where the term “guilty pleasure” came from, right? Well, what if you just trashed the guilt and kept the pleasure?

You still with me? No one is lighting their life on fire walking around feeling bad about feeling good. I mean, if you’re going to do something. Do it. Own it. Enjoy it. And then let it go. Apologize if it’s called for. Honor your integrity, responsibility and caring. But by all means, don’t CHOOSE to feel bad. No one benefits from that. Literally no one.So the next time you find yourself “feeling bad” or feeling guilty, ask yourself: what do I have to be grateful for in the situation? Is it chocolate cake? A screaming orgasm? A surprise gift? A day off from working on your dreams? Or your finances? An understanding friend? Instead of feeling bad, express that gratitude. Say thank you, write a note, take notice. You are luckier than you realize and you deserve all that goodness. So by all means, feel it!!

Turn your guilt into gratitude and keep it movin’!
